The Agency for Communications Networks and Services of the Republic of Slovenia hereby informs the public that the Director of the Agency, Mr. Marko Mišmaš, in his capacity as the incoming BEREC Chair, met with Henna Virkkunen, Executive Vice President of the European Commission for Technological Sovereignty, Security and Democracy. The meeting, which took place at BEREC's headquarters, was marked by discussions on the future of European electronic communications regulation and was attended by the BEREC Chair, Robert Mourik of the Irish regulator ComReg, and the Director of BEREC, Dr Verena Weber, alongside the Agency's Director.
The event represents a major milestone in the efforts of BEREC and its Office to effectively implement the European regulatory framework and reinforces BEREC's role as a key expert and administrative support to European regulators.
Commissioner Virkkunen took the opportunity to underline that it is of paramount importance that European regulation remains fit for the future and keeps pace with rapid technological change. "I am delighted to have had the opportunity to visit BEREC in Riga and to meet the team that supports BEREC's work with its high level of expertise. In the new phase of regulation, BEREC's expertise will be key to achieving Europe's digital connectivity goals," she said.
The Agency's Director, Ms. Marko Mišmaš, who will take over the BEREC Chairmanship in 2026, stressed the importance of simplifying regulation and adapting to new technological realities. "Based on the extensive experience of its members, BEREC is ready to look at areas where regulation could be simplified and made more efficient for stakeholders and the market," said Mr Mišmaš.
On the sidelines of the meeting with the European Commissioner, the Techritory 2025 conference took place in Riga, where the Director was a keynote speaker and actively participated in a panel discussion on the importance of resilient and secure networks, a supportive competitive environment and a regulatory framework that keeps pace with technological developments. He also highlighted the high cost of cyber security borne by operators and the need for resilient solutions to ensure continuity of communications in crisis situations.
The Techritory conference is one of Europe's leading platforms for discussing the future of digital connectivity, bringing together representatives from European institutions, regulators, industry, academia and innovators in Riga every year.
