Agency launches new web portal to promote digital radio

The Agency for Communications Networks and Services of the Republic of Slovenia informs the public that it has launched a new web portal dab.si, which brings together all information on digital radio in the Republic of Slovenia. In order to further promote the development of the digital radio platform, the Agency will now publish on this new website all key information on networks, current calls for tenders, programmes, as well as practical guidance on how to receive digital radio programmes and other news.

The first DAB network was launched in 2016. Today, 59 channels are already broadcast on this platform. This number will soon grow, as the deadline for applications to the call for tenders for the broadcasting of digital radio programmes on DAB networks has recently passed. The tender is not yet closed, but 20 bids were received on time, 14 for national coverage and 6 for the Ljubljana area,

DAB is a digital radio broadcasting technology that allows multiple radio programmes to be broadcast on a single frequency. Digital broadcasting brings advantages for listeners in terms of quality reception, no interference, a wider range of radio programmes, as well as the display of accompanying textual and pictorial information.

The Agency adds that digital radio is not a substitute for FM broadcasting. It is a new platform with additional capacity and new services. To receive DAB digital radio, a receiver is needed that supports DAB as well as FM radio, and receivers are available for desktop, portable and car. Under the Electronic Communications Act, DAB receivers must also be fitted in new cars.
