This year's IRC International Regulators' Conference (IRC), organised by the Agency for Electronic Communications of the Republic of North Macedonia (AEC) and the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), took place in Skopje from 20 to 21 May. The Director of the Agency, Mr. Marko Mišmaš, who will take over the leadership of the BEREC Group in the coming year, responded to a special invitation from the organiser and together with a team of experts from the Agency, shared at the event both the experience from the national level and the strategic view on the development of the communications field at the international level.
The conference, held under the theme "Harnessing Technology for a Digital Future", marked three important events, in addition to the 160th anniversary of the founding of ITU, the 25th anniversary of the establishment of the Telecommunications Directorate as the first regulatory body in the host country and the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the Agency for Electronic Communications as an independent regulator.
Looking back served as an important expert platform to address future challenges for countries in the areas of spectrum management, cybersecurity and digital infrastructure mapping. The participating experts paid particular attention to the new generation of regulation required by rapid technological developments.
The Agency's delegation, led by its Director, actively participated in panels and other events of the conference, presenting its expert view on the important role of regulators in an era of accelerated digital transformation and the future direction of the ITU as an important international platform for the exchange of best practices. The Agency's expert Gašper Lakota Jeriček presented the Agency's experience with the awarding of frequencies for local private mobile networks.
Looking to the future and taking over the leadership of BEREC, the Agency's Director also highlighted the shared vision of the two organisations and called for further strengthening of their cooperation in promoting effective regulation, supporting technological development and ensuring an inclusive digital transformation. In doing so, both ITU and BEREC should strive to provide a supportive formal and informal environment where Member States will have the space to exchange knowledge and ideas, and then successfully implement them in their local environment, thus contributing to a fair digital future for all.
