The Agency for Communication Networks and Services of the Republic of Slovenia (AKOS) held a consultation today entitled ‘Regulatory Sandboxes for Artificial Intelligence: a bridge between innovation and regulatory compliance’, organised by the Competence Centre for Artificial Intelligence (KCUI), presented its role in establishing Slovenia’s first AI regulatory sandbox and the current public call for proposals to select its scope of application.
At the consultation, aimed primarily at businesses, AI developers and solution providers, as well as regulatory compliance experts, Nataša Vidmar Kraljević, Head of the Artificial Intelligence Sector at AKOS, presented the process for establishing the regulatory sandbox and the ways in which the interested public can participate in its design right from the outset.
“The regulatory sandbox will enable businesses and developers to address compliance issues whilst developing AI solutions and in direct collaboration with regulators. When selecting the first area, we therefore wish to base our decision on the actual needs of the market and the wider public. The public call is an opportunity for them to tell us where the greatest development potential and regulatory challenges lie,” emphasised Nataša Vidmar Kraljević.
Vidmar Kraljević went on to explain that, at this stage, AKOS is not yet selecting specific projects or AI systems for inclusion in the sandbox. Through the public call, it first aims to gather proposals from the interested public regarding the subject areas where, due to development potential, regulatory challenges and market interest, the establishment of a sandbox would be most appropriate.
Proposals may be submitted until 30 September 2026 by companies of all sizes, start-ups, research organisations and universities, public institutions, providers and users of AI systems, and individuals. Expressions of interest are non-binding, and the proposals received will form the technical basis for deciding on the priority area for Slovenia’s first regulatory sandbox for AI.
Once the area has been selected, a second phase will follow, in which AKOS will publish a separate public call for the submission of specific AI solutions for development and testing in the regulatory sandbox.
