The Agency for Communication Networks and Services of the Republic of Slovenia informs the interested public that the Electronic Communications Committee (ECC) has announced the launch of a public consultation on two documents dealing with improving the security and availability of SMS communications in Europe. The public and interested stakeholders are invited to comment on the proposed measures, which have an impact on the protection of users and access to emergency services.
The first document, ECC Draft Recommendation (25)04: "Measures to handle alphanumeric SMS Sender IDs" , aims to combat the increasing abuse and fraud associated with spoofing of SMS senders. The draft Recommendation provides detailed guidelines for telecommunications operators on the registration, verification and monitoring of alphanumeric sender IDs, with the aim of preventing phishing and increasing confidence in the legitimacy of the messages received. It aims to ensure greater transparency and traceability, thereby reducing the number of phishing attacks and scams.
The second document, ECC Draft Report 368 "SMS to 112 and other national emergency numbers for roaming end-users" , addresses the technical and operational requirements to ensure efficient SMS messaging to 112 and other national emergency numbers, specifically for users roaming on foreign mobile networks. The aim is to ensure that international travellers can reliably access help via SMS in an emergency, which is crucial for their safety and health in a cross-border environment.
